WP Job Manager's free core: what it covers and what still costs money

The core plugin, made by Automattic, runs on a WordPress site you host. It covers employer submission forms, Google job markup and RSS links for job alerts. Email job alerts are a paid extension, meaning a paid plugin that adds one function to the free core. WordPress.org lists WordPress 6.4 and PHP 7.4 or higher as requirements.

Paid listings are not free: they need WooCommerce plus the WC Paid Listings add-on, $49 a year on a Personal license for one site or $109 a year on a Developer license for unlimited sites. Add-ons carry a 14-day refund window and no refunds follow it. Hosting sits outside every figure.

Hosted trials: length, card and what happens at the end

Job Boardly's trial runs 14 days on every plan. A card is needed to start, nothing is charged until the trial ends, and the paid plan then begins on its own unless you cancel first. Imports are held at 250 jobs during the trial, and each customer gets one trial. Job Boardly lists no free plan and no money-back guarantee; its terms rule out pro-rata refunds unless the law requires one.

Niceboard's 7-day trial has a payment step at sign-up, refuses prepaid cards and is not extended. JBoard asks for a card because a board may go live during the trial. JobBoard.io's home page says no credit card is needed to start. Its agreement separately says subscription fees are paid by card. SmartJobBoard's trial page says free for 14 days.

Creating a job board website for free, step by step

The route that stays free uses WordPress and the core plugin; a hosted trial ends in a paid plan.

  1. Have a WordPress site on WordPress 6.4 and PHP 7.4 or higher, with hosting you pay for.
  2. Install and activate WP Job Manager.
  3. Run the optional Setup Wizard, which creates the default pages the plugin needs.
  4. Let employers submit listings through the front-end form; expired listings stay off the public board by default.

Charging employers is not in those steps: it adds WooCommerce and the paid add-on above. How to create a job board on WordPress walks through the full set, and best WordPress job board plugin prices each add-on.

When a paid hosted plan is worth it

A hosted plan fits a founder who would rather not run WordPress hosting. Job Boardly's About page says the platform handles hosting, maintenance and integrations. Standard, $60 a month billed monthly, includes Stripe Checkout for paid posts and the Job Backfiller, a tool that fills a board from a database Job Boardly says holds roughly 12 million active listings.

Pick WP Job Manager for a free core plugin on hosting you already pay for, and JobBoard.io or SmartJobBoard for a trial their pages say needs no card. Job Boardly's own free period is a 14-day trial that asks for a card, and is Job Boardly free answers that question in full.
