Are job boards profitable? The break-even test
A job board is profitable in a month when what its paid postings net exceeds its costs, and the first cost to cover is the software plan. Postings needed equal the plan fee divided by what one posting nets, rounded up. No vendor publishes typical revenue, a payback time or a subscriber count, so every count here rests on the posting price you set.

Try Job Boardly →Plan fees on both billing bases
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed annually, per month | Annual total printed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Job Boardly Standard | $60 a month | $40 a month | $480 a year |
| Job Boardly Pro | $120 a month | $80 a month | $960 a year |
| Job Boardly Ultra | $240 a month | $160 a month | $1,920 a year |
| JBoard Basic | $149 a month | $119 a month | Not printed |
| Niceboard Core | $399 a month | $319 a month | Not printed |
A newsletter writer with 20,000 subscribers in one profession, who wants a board on a subdomain filled with backfilled listings at first, would start on Standard. Billed monthly that is $60 a month; billed annually it is one payment of $480 for the year, which Job Boardly labels "Save 33%". Annual billing is paid in advance, so month one needs $480 rather than $60 on monthly billing. Standard allows 10,000 job alert subscribers and Pro 20,000, so if more than 10,000 of those readers sign up for job alerts, the board needs Pro ($120 a month billed monthly or $80 a month billed annually).
What one paid posting nets: Stripe's fee and refunds
Net means what the board keeps from one paid posting after Stripe's own fees and any refund. Job Boardly says revenue lands directly in your account with no middleman, and JBoard says you keep every sale minus Stripe's standard processing fees. Take your posting price, subtract the fees Stripe lists on its pricing page and any refund, and use the result in the table below.
Postings needed per month at three stated posting nets
The three nets below, $60, $120 and $240, are assumptions chosen for this illustration. They are not vendor prices and not a forecast.
| Plan fee, billed monthly | At $60 net | At $120 net | At $240 net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Job Boardly Standard, $60 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Job Boardly Pro, $120 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Job Boardly Ultra, $240 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
| JBoard Basic, $149 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| Niceboard Core, $399 | 7 | 4 | 2 |
At $60 net, Niceboard Core at $399 billed monthly needs seven. Billed annually, the counts at $60 net fall to 3 for Ultra, 2 for JBoard Basic and 6 for Niceboard Core. Job Boardly Standard at $60 a month, billed monthly, is covered by one paid posting a month that nets $60 or more after Stripe's own fee; job board software cost sets out the plan fees by board size.
A first year on paper: fee, credits and a slow start
Job Boardly labels its revenue calculator an estimate, Niceboard's home page headlines one association board's first-year profit, and JBoard says a board can pay for itself with 2 job posts a month. Those are the vendors' own claims, not results this page relies on.
Job Boardly's own guide expects the first month to bring a live board, real listings, working payments and a first promotional push, "not instant profitability", and says SEO typically takes 2 to 3 months to gain traction. On paper, a first year on Standard costs $480 billed annually, plus $12 for each block of 1,000 job imports past the monthly allowance of 1,000; credits are non-refundable, and a price change comes with at least 30 days' notice.
Job Boardly's 14-day trial lets a founder set post prices and test checkout before the first plan fee is charged; a card is needed to start. How do job boards make money lists the revenue models, and Job Boardly pricing has the plans.
