How do job boards make money? Five revenue models
Job boards make money from paid postings, posting packages, employer subscriptions, a paywall for job seekers and ads. Backfill feeds fill a board but are not counted as income here.
- Paid postings. Employers pay for each listing.
- Packages. Employers buy a bundle of postings.
- Employer subscriptions. Employers pay monthly or annually for posting packages.
- A paywall for job seekers. Job seekers pay for access by subscription.
- Ads. Google AdSense, on an approved account.

Try Job Boardly →Paid postings, packages and employer subscriptions
Job Boardly takes employer payments through Stripe Checkout, with three default post prices: Basic, Promoted and Featured. Only Basic is active at first, and highlighted and sticky listings are the ways to charge more for the same post. One currency applies to every price on the board. Coupon codes are a posting incentive.
Job Boardly's pricing-models post describes duration-based pricing, a flat fee for a posting over a set period, and subscription-based pricing, a fixed monthly or annual fee covering all of an employer's postings, and says a board can run more than one model at once.
Another payment provider can replace Stripe through one payment link, but then only basic posts are sold, with no coupons. JBoard charges for postings on every plan and starts subscriptions, packages and resume database access on Standard, not Basic. Niceboard lists subscriptions, packages and upsells from Core.
Post prices can be set during Job Boardly's 14-day trial, before any plan fee is charged; a card is needed to start.
A paywall for job seekers, and Google's login rule
Job Boardly sells a paywall as subscription access, on every plan, with a preview left open. Niceboard lists gated jobs and applications from Core. Google's job posting policy does not allow postings that require a login to view the job description, or that require payment from applicants; weigh that policy against the paywall before you decide which listings to gate.
Ads, paid messaging and the backfill question
Job Boardly integrates with Google AdSense for boards with an approved AdSense account. On Ultra, in-product messaging lets a board charge employers to start a conversation with candidates.
Job Boardly's monetization post calls backfilling one of the fastest ways to start earning, while its backfilling post says to treat backfill as a content strategy first and a revenue stream second and none of its plan pages documents a payment to the board, so no backfill income is counted here.
Its pricing-models post adds that publisher shares sit in individual partner agreements and are not published, and that cost-per-click and pay-per-application pricing are not built in. The break-even arithmetic is on are job boards profitable.
Which software supports each model
Job Boardly sells paid posts, packages and a candidate paywall on every plan and adds employer subscriptions from Pro, with payments landing in your own Stripe account. The plan fees are on Job Boardly pricing.
WP Job Manager sells packages through the WC Paid Listings add-on and WooCommerce. Niceboard sells jobs and talent pool access through built-in Stripe payments and supports Stripe only for now. JobBoard.io checks out through Stripe or PayPal, and says employers can buy single posts, multiple posts or profile database access. SmartJobBoard says it processes every employer transaction on its revenue-share route, which is aimed at associations; job board software for associations covers that case.
